Let’s get to it.
Around Town
El Paso Facing Issues With New World Screwworm
A parasite called the New World Screwworm, found in a cow near Mexico’s border with Guatemala, has led to a U.S. ban on Mexican cattle imports since November.
This ban could increase feeder steer prices by 8% and slow beef production, potentially raising consumer prices.
This increase could impact the price of beef for consumers in El Paso as well. We’ll see where this goes, but hopefully things improve soon!
Silvestre Reyes Honored At Fort Bliss
Former U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, who served El Paso in Congress for 16 years after a distinguished Border Patrol career, was honored with the renaming of the 1st Armored Division's main entrance at Fort Bliss.
The "Silvestre Reyes Gate" was unveiled during a ceremony on Jan. 10, attended by local leaders including U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar and former Mayor Oscar Leeser.
Major General Curtis Taylor credited Reyes' leadership for transforming Fort Bliss into one of the Army’s largest installations. Reyes expressed gratitude for the recognition, dedicating it to his late wife, Carolina, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
New Deputy Fire Warden
El Paso County has appointed Elizabeth “Lizz” Floro as Deputy Fire Warden to enhance wildfire management and emergency preparedness.
Overseeing 2,100 square miles of unincorporated land, Floro brings expertise to a team active since 1994.
Sheriff Joseph Roybal emphasized the importance of her role in strengthening strategies, interagency coordination, and wildfire response. With the tragedy in California, this role becomes so much more important.
