Local News

Is Canutillo ISD Going Bankrupt? 🏫

The Canutillo Independent School District (CISD) is facing a huge budget deficit that could lead to bankruptcy if not fixed. Superintendent Pedro Galaviz shared that the district's finances are struggling due to a state funding system that doesn’t meet the needs of local schools.

Officials are still working out how bad the deficit is and discussing tough cost-saving measures. A board meeting will be held on March 4 at 5:00 P.M. to talk about the district’s finances and possible solutions. It’s a tough situation, and everyone is hoping for a way to get things back on track. Let’s hope we can figure it out!

Duranguito Area Set for Transformation 🏗️

The City of El Paso is moving forward with plans to sell and redevelop properties in the Duranguito area, which was once planned for a new arena. After years of opposition and a voter-approved measure stopping the arena project, the City is looking to turn the area into a vibrant space.

The City Council will meet on February 25 to discuss a request for proposals (RFQ) for developers to help revamp the area. The plan includes preserving historic buildings, adding green spaces, new housing, and creating a lively district for retail, entertainment, and culture. The RFQ process will start in March. We’ll keep you updated when we find out more.

Funding Boost for Local Projects 🚧

El Paso County is taking steps to issue $52 million in certificates of obligation to improve infrastructure, like clean water, road safety, and flood control. This debt will not increase taxes for residents, which helps me breathe a sigh of relief.

The County Commissioners Court will approve the first step on March 17, kicking off a 45-day waiting period. The funding aims to improve safety and quality of life for everyone in the county, especially in underserved areas.

Local Business

Joanna Fabrics & Crafts Closing In El Paso 👋

Joann is closing all of its stores after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy again. The fabric and craft retailer, once with over 800 locations, was auctioned off to a new group. They had already announced plans to close about 500 stores, but now all locations will shut down after going-out-of-business sales.

The sales started on February 15 and may last until the end of May. Discounts range from 10-75% depending on the item, but gift cards and returns aren’t accepted. Joann says they appreciate their customers, team members, and communities after more than 80 years in business. If you’re looking for some great deal, now is a great time to stop by before everything run out.
